Thanks to Mashable’s list of top chocolate ads on YouTube, I was reminded of Cadbury’s original Glass Half Full Productions. You probably know them, considering they were among the most random ads for chocolate in memory.

When they came out, before I started my degree, I enjoyed the ads but wondered what the hell they were thinking not actually doing anything with the ads. Sure, I remembered them and they were entertaining, and a lot of times I remembered the brand, but I couldn’t see how they’d make the audience go out and buy chocolate.

Then I finished my advertising degree.

The ads were for milk chocolate, and the logo for “glass half full” was milk. The ads were all about making happiness. At the end of each ad, they showed the chocolate. Therefore, their idea was to associate the entertainment for the ads with Cadbury chocolate.

Whether or not they succeeded is up for debate. But, I can see the thought behind it. This is probably the first time, after graduating, that I’ve really been able to see what my ad degree has done.

It’s kinda fun.

What is it about cats that creates internet page-view gold?
“But why have cats specifically been so successful at soliciting our attention? One hypothesis is that there is a fateful link between cats and human babies that explains their Internet stardom. According to Michael Newall, a philosopher of art at the University of Kent, our inordinate interest in cats may derive from their formal resemblance to our offspring—their big eyes, smallish noses, and dome-shaped heads trigger the evolutionary nurturing instincts that we have evolved toward babies. There may even be a multiplying “superstimulus” effect at work: Newall posits that the exaggerated proportions of cats’ baby-like features prompt an exaggeratedly intense, and involuntary, response in people.”

There are social factors at play as well. Steve Dale, a cat behavior consultant and pet journalist, told me that cat aficionados have been particularly drawn to the Internet because they lack other public safety valves where they can express their affection. “In the world of cats, there is no dog park,” Dale says. “For cat owners, the dog park is the Internet.”

10 Novels That Will Sharpen Your Mind [Interactive]
Novels may be made up, but the emotions they evoke are real. These feelings grow out of our connection to the novel’s characters and the relationships between a protagonist and others in the context of the broader society. As we follow the ups and downs of a carefully crafted story, we build connections within the social and emotional regions of the brain. The result, according to recent research, is a better understanding of other human beings and a deeper empathy for others, leading to improved social skills. Historians have also claimed that great works of fiction have lent support to the concept of human rights. (For more on the psychology of fiction, see “In the Minds of Others,” by Keith Oatley, Scientific American Mind, November/December 2011.)

Picture of the Day: Snowfall Across Italy, From Space

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’a Aqua satellite captured this picture of Italy last week, shortly after recent snowstorms had blanketed much of the country. The Aqua satellite has been in orbit since 2002, collecting information about all aspects of the Earth’s water cycle, including evaporation, clouds, soil moisture, and fluctuations in sea and land ice cover.
